Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)
What is EFT?


Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is an effective form of Energy Psychology therapy.  EFT is an emotional version of acupuncture, except needles are not used.  Instead, we stimulate well established energy points on your body called Meridians by tapping on them with our fingertips.  Meridians are energy channels also known as Chi.  One of the pillars of Traditional Chinese Medicine, meridians are invisible lines that run through the body that carry energy to every organ and system.  EFT stimulates the proper flow of energy throughout the meridians on your body and eliminates energy and emotional blockages. While we are tapping, we tune into and focus on the issue or the emotion at hand.  This simple process eliminates energy blockages in your body, which then results in clearing the negative emotions which in turn brings relief from the physical symptoms as well. By balancing the energy system and allowing energy to flow freely, whatever issue you are experiencing should minimize or disappear completely.  Acupuncturists know that stimulating and balancing meridians can alleviate pain and other symptoms as well. EFT, however, works not only with pain, but emotions, phobias, self-esteem and so much more.  Sometimes EFT works where nothing else does.  Many Acupuncturists are now using EFT as an alternative method to healing as well.

EFT allows us to remove Negative Learned Beliefs in our subconscious programs by releasing the energy usually stored as emotions (emotions = energy in motion) from our cells. Emotions are the end result of an experience, if you are suffering from the results of a bad experience, EFT can help you release these emotions so that they no longer have a hold on you.  EFT works on the emotional body or subconscious mind.  To change your life you must change your mind by changing your beliefs and emotions that no longer serve you.  EFT is a remarkable tool that can help you achieve just that.

Mind Chatter

You know that little voice in your head that sometimes takes over your thinking mind with endless dialogues?  That voice that is always sabotaging you?  This voice is known for its attempts to try to make you feel unworthy, doubtful and fearful about things that haven't even happened yet.  EFT can help reduce that "mind chatter" especially the way you react to those thoughts as well.

That voice in your head is not real; it's your egoic mind.  The problem here is that we were taught and conditioned to believe that our thoughts are real and that we need to pay attention to what they have to say.  "I think, therefore, I AM."  The I AM in this phrase is the ego and not the true unlimited Being that you are. The majority of the population suffers from this obsessive compulsive thinking (OCT).  It is so common that most people can live their entire lives without ever realizing this.

Do you want to find out if you suffer from this mind chatter or OCT?  It is simple, stop for a moment and realize that your mind is usually thinking about something that has already happened, or is worrying about a future event that has not happened yet.  The worse enemy of the egoic mind is the present moment.   Being in acceptance and surrendering to this moment in complete joy is possible to achieve by learning how to BE here now without emotionally being attached to the past or the future.  EFT is a tool that can facilitate this process.


Some Science Behind All of This.....

According to Dr. Joe Dispenza, author of Evolve Your Brain explains that for every thought we have, our brain produces a chemical so that our body can FEEL exactly the way we are THINKING.  Stop for a moment and really think about this statement.  If this is true, then every time you have a happy thought your brain produces a happy chemical.  The same then is true for when you have a negative thought, do you agree?  This is all good if the majority of the time you are thinking positive or happy thoughts.  However, if you are thinking negative or bad thoughts most of the time, what do you think happens then?  You start feeling bad, right?  Now because you are feeling bad you start thinking about how you are feeling, in turn your brain produces more chemicals so you can continue to feel the you are thinking.  You are now caught up in a loop of thinking and feeling, feeling and thinking; hence the human drama.  Dr. Joe explains that what ultimately happens is that feeling becomes the means of thinking, what that means is that mind is now immersed in the body.  You are not thinking as a mind, you are now thinking as a body.  The body memorizes the condition, a habit is when the body memorizes an emotion.  And now because the body is determining the outcome based on a feeling you start waking up in morning feeling bad, or insecure, or afraid, or doubtful, or angry and the list goes on.  According to Dr. Joe, 90% of who we are sits in the subconscious programs.  As an example: if a person has insecure thoughts pretty soon she'll start feeling insecure.  Over time this person becomes insecure, she is now addicted to the feeling of insecurity and feels she has no control over how she feels.  That's when EFT can be used to help you release yourself from this loop and get you to think greater than how you feel.

Dr. Joe explains that emotions are the end result of an experience.  When we remember an experience we do so because we remember how we felt.  We remember our first kiss, our first day in school, when we learned how to ride a bike or when we first learned how to drive a car.  When we learn something, we learn the knowledge first, it's not until we put into practice that we actually experience what we learned.  The brain produces the chemicals to teach the body what the mind knows intellectually.  Neuroscience tells us that the brain cannot differentiate between what we imagine and what we actually experience.  So when we are thinking about a past event, the brain produces the same chemicals that it produced when the event actually took place.  Therefore, when we think about a past event we are in reality re-living the event chemically and emotionally the same exact way we did when we first experienced it.  That's how people can develop Post Traumatic Syndrome, because they re-live the same event over and over again in their mind because how they felt at the time was extremely traumatic for them.  This happens because our Frontal Lobe allows us to make thought more real than anything else.  Just think for a moment and remember how easy it is for you to get yourself worked up when you mentally re-enact that last fight you had with somebody that really hurt you.  Stop for a moment and realize that you can get yourself to feel the same anger, resentment, frustration and sadness that you felt when it actually happened.  Do you want more proof that the mind affects the body?  Ask any young man to close his eyes and mentally visualize his favorite Victoria Secret model being sweet to him and you tell me if his private parts don't start to react.  I guarantee you it will because the body is always reacting to how we think and feel, always.

I bet by now you are starting to understand why change can sometimes be so difficult.  Let's just say that after 20 years, Bettie wakes up one morning and says to herself that she no longer wants to feel insecure.  She starts paying more attention to her thoughts and is able to control herself to some extend so that she no longer acts insecure every time her husband Gerry who is a fisherman goes to work.  Everything is well for about 2 weeks, until one day Gerry is 4 hours late and Bettie has now been triggered by this event and goes on an uncontrollable loop of thinking and feeling, feeling and thinking insecure.  What do you think happened here?  The answer is simple, Bettie's BODY HAS BECOME EMOTIONALLY ADDICTED to feeling insecure. 


Conscious and the Subconscious Mind

The subconscious is like a hard drive in a super computer that is pre-programmed, without a programmer watching over it.  There is no discernment as to whether the behavioral programs are good or bad there is no judgment; they are just software running the behavior.  The subconscious mind does not reason and isn't a creative consciousness; it is strictly a stimulus-response system.  Since most of our behavior are under the control of the subconscious mind, we rarely observe them or much less know that they are even engaged, so 99% of our behavior is stimulus-response.

During the first six years, a child is unconsciously programmed by the social consciousness of their families, teachers and friends with beliefs and scripts that become unchecked behavior response.  When a child is told they are stupid, fat, a loser, undeserving, or any other negative trait, this is downloaded as a fact into the youngster's subconscious mind.  Some programs are derived from genetics, these are our instincts and they represent nature.  However, the vast majority of the subconscious programs are acquired though our developmental learning experiences, they represent nurture.  These acquired beliefs become the voices within that control the fate of the child.  While the conscious mind is saying I'm OK, the more powerful unconscious mind simultaneously engages in self-destructive behavior.

We have been led to believe that by using will power, we can override the negative programs of our subconscious mind and make changes.  Greater learning and change occur in the subconscious mind because the subconscious mind processes information a million times faster than the conscious mind.  This is why most people never change.  Their best conscious thinking got them where they are now.  That is why the first step in the process of change is awareness or consciousness.  So, as you become aware, you can choose to change if you are using the right tools to edit and re-write the software in the subconscious mind.

Conscious Mind - This is where our will power, reasoning and short term memory exists.  This is where most people try to make changes and fail.  This is because of several reasons; the subconscious is too powerful and it probably has learned several negative feelings (fear, doubt, anger, judgment, sadness, unhappy, depressed, etc.)  Conscious:  you set goals and judge results, think abstractly, use linear processing like access past, present and future - people, places, things, times and events, short term memory, processes - averages 2,000 bits of information per second.

Subconscious Mind - This is where our habits are formed (as well as our self-concept, personality) and where permanent memory is stored.  This is where true change takes place in the "hard drive" of our mind's computer and where Emotional Freedom Techniques is able to integrate and diffuse unwanted scripts, programs, unconscious intentionality and is able to reprogram the future events by changing the old negative beliefs.  Subconscious:  thinks literally (only the now exits), uses long term memory (personality, past experiences, attitudes, values, beliefs, unconscious intentionality and the emotional self), processes averages 400 billion bits of information per second.

According to some experts like the Neuroscientist Dr. Candace Pert, YOUR BODY IS YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS MIND.  Dr. Pert has spend the last 25 years mapping the molecules of emotions in our body, showing to us that our emotions are indeed stored in our cells.  Another expert the Biologist Dr. Bruce Lipton also explains to us in his book The Biology of Belief that our emotions play a significant role in our ability to stay healthy and that by just being aware of a subconscious program is not enough to override it.  When we are young and developing our mind, subconscious programs are created instantaneously by everything we hear and do.  So if you were lucky enough to be born with parents that did nothing but give you positive information to be stored in your subconscious program, you are like millions of people that consciously have a desire but feel that something is keeping you from achieving it and you don't know why or what it is.

Remember, if you repeat a thought over and over again soon enough it will become a habit or SUBCONSCIOUS PROGRAM.  That is how we learn everything in life.  That's how we learned how to walk, drive a car or even dial a phone number without consciously remembering it (but your fingers know exactly how to dial).  When you first learned how to drive, you had to pay very close attention to your driving, right?  Well, how about today?  Can you drive and do other things?  Like talking on a cell phone, or how about when you are preoccupied thinking about other things and next thing you know you drove 20 miles and missed your exit!  Who was driving the car?  Your SUBCONSCIOUS MIND/YOUR BODY because driving has become a learned behavior that you have learned so well that you no longer need to consciously think about it.  The same is true for other learned behaviors like our dear friend Bettie.  For us to be able to change a habit that no longer serves us we need to release this from the subconscious programs/body.  Otherwise, we will continue to feed the endless wheel of thinking and feeling, feeling and thinking of the same patterns.

EFT is a remarkable tool because of it's effectiveness to release emotional programs from our body.  Allowing one to make permanent changes in their lives TODAY.  The effectiveness of EFT allows this to happen a lot faster rate than in conventional talk therapies where in most cases only a few EFT sessions are needed instead of years of therapy.  In fact, conventional cognitive therapies only makes you remember all of the things that happened to you in the past as an attempt to understand yourself better.  However, every time you remember the past you are actually biologically and chemically re-living that same situation over and over again.


Enhance Your Self-Image


Perhaps the world's most common disease is Self Image issues.  These limits show up in our business performance (wallet), relationships (love) and many of our other vital pursuits. Entire sections of most bookstores are dedicated to it. Self improvement books and seminars are consistently in demand and have been so for decades. People buy those books and attend those seminars with hope and gusto. It feels good to let go of some limits.  For most people, however, Self Image improvement tends to be fleeting. They read a book or attend a seminar and enthusiastically go about purposely generating positive and joyous thoughts--at least for awhile. But alas, all too often the enthusiasm fades and the Self Image reverts back to its former self. This story has been told many times. 

 

EFT is a technique that can permanently kick limiting passengers off of one's emotional bus. I am talking about neutralizing the useless forms of guilt, fear, grief, trauma, anger and self doubts that weigh down our Self Images. To the extent we can remove this weight; better Self Images would naturally emerge.
